Germs: Gross, Cool, or Both?

Germs: the world is full of them! Viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites are everywhere – in your home, school, and office, at the mall, and on public transit. It’s important to know how germs really work, and how we can protect ourselves.

It’s Catching: The Infectious World of Germs and Microbes is new from Owlkids Books. It gives 8- to 12-year-olds all the information they need about germs, including plenty of cool and gross factoids. The author is self-described disease detective Dr. Jennifer Gardy, who works as a senior scientist at British Columbia’s Centre for Disease Control.

Jennifer can often be found on TV and radio talking about germs and diseases – watch out for her on Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet and CBC’s The Nature of Things. In a recent media tour in Toronto,  Jennifer appeared on Global TV’s The Morning Show and did an especially fun demo of how germs spread when double-dipping:

Gardy 1 Gardy 2

Check it out here! We dare you to double dip ever again.
