Lots of Canadians are working hard in Africa and around the world to bring access to clean water to those in need. WaterCan is one Canadian group that's going the extra mile to help and not just by building wells. Read up on one of the group's many projects in Africa!
Problem: In the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya, open sewers run along the roads. Poor sanitation leads to all kinds of health problems diarrhea alone kills two out of every 100 children.
Solution: WaterCan installed a new water system for the 300 students at the Makina Baptist Primary School. It also created a hygiene education program. Because many people in rural villages can't read, local leaders used drawings and plays to explain the importance of washing hands and keeping sewage away from clean water.
Outcome: Following this advice, the kids of Kibera are much healthier, and incidents of diarrhea have gone down by half.
