Mother’s Day
Here at the OWL blog, we follow a simple rule: “Ask and ye shall receive (pretty much).” Yesterday, blog reader Sydney asked for ideas on things to do for Mother’s Day this Sunday. Today, I’ve got a list of Mother’s Day ideas!
The important thing is to let Mom know you care. And you don’t need to spend a ton of money to do that. Here are my Top 10 ideas:
10. Plant Something
A small tree, if possible. It’s good for the environment, and your Mom will think of you whenever she looks at it!
9. Go for a Walk
8. Go for a Walk [Down Memory Lane]
Grab Mom and look through the family photo albums. Or make a homemade frame for a favourite shot!
7. Make Breakfast
In the May 2005 Calendar, we included a simple little recipe called “Mom’s Morning Muffin.” You’ll need one English muffin, one egg, and one slice of ham and/or a slice of cheese. Then:
1. Toast the English muffin and fry (or microwave) the egg.
2. Slide the egg onto the bottom half of the English muffin.
3. Add ham and/or cheese.
4. Top with the other half of the English muffin.
Voilà! A delicious — and easy — breakfast! Just for Mom.
6. Write a Poem
Maybe make it an acrostic, as taught to you in April OWL! Here’s one I just made up:
Mom, you are so
On top of things, it
Makes me think you’re half cloud
Awesome? Sort of awesome? Let’s move on.
5. Write a Coupon
Trust me: everyone loves coupons. The coupons you give to Mom should say things like, “This coupon entitles the holder to one free backrub!” Or “Present this coupon to [your name here] for free dish-washing services.” Then, when she presents it to you, be ready to jump into action.
4. Give Flowers
Sure, it’s not exactly original. But it’s a sure-fire hit.
3. Make Jewelry
Seriously! Store-bought jewelry is so expensive! Besides, as we showed you in the 2006 Summer Digest, you probably have enough stuff to make cool jewelry kicking around the house. You’ll just need to find a thick elastic, nuts of different sizes, washers, and springs. Then:
1. Cut elastic so it’s one long piece.
2. String hardware onto elastic.
3. Tie ends of elastic together.
And there you have it: a rockin’ bracelet!
2. Draw a Portrait
Grab a photo of Mom, study it, then reproduce it in your own artistic style. Present it to her in a card or a homemade frame. Magnifique!
1. All of the Above
Remember: nothing’s too good for Mom on Mother’s Day!

That’s it for me, guys. Hope you have a great weekend, and your Mom does too!

Ha that’s funny Craig the number one thing my mom wants for mothers day is a apple tree or a cherry tree. A question about an acrostic poem (this is also for the contest) do the words have to be put in a order that it is a sentence? Okay Happy Mothers Day!

I found these earrings we gave mom last mothers day,but she`s never worn them and has completely forgot about them,so I polished them up and I`m going to give them to her in a card! If she NEVER EVER wears them…uh…finders keepers! lol.

oh, cake in a cup is awesome! and none of you are ever, EVER gonna believe this, but earlier today it was SNOWING! yes, you saw that right, SNOWING! i was so upset, cause the snow had finally completely melted just last week. but it only snowed for like five minuets, so there’s no lasting damage.

Oh Thanks Katie. Just to clarify I mean like all the words for example MOM Mom, you are so
On top of things, it
Makes me think you’re half cloud <-that is a sentence and so is the one in owl “original people will always love learning”.

Hey Mara, you can do your acrostic in whatever way you like. You can do a single word for each letter, or a sentence for each letter, or whatever. As long as the first letters of each line spell out the theme of your poem, you’re all set!

Wait, which contest are we talking about? It’s too late to enter the Create a Comic Contest, but you still have time to enter the Creative Creature and the Acrostic Poetry.
As for your question, Maddy, we’ll be selecting winners of the Creative Creature Contest just after the deadline (end of this month). Winners will be notified shortly after that, and prizes will follow. Hope that answers your question!
