A Party for Canada

Have you read the story A Party for Canada by Lana Button in the June issue of Chirp Magazine? This story focuses on some of the many cultural traditions we are proud to have in Canada. Here are some facts about them:

• A hanbok is a colourful South Korean dress that reaches the floor.
• The Chicken Dance originated in Switzerland. It’s a popular dance where you flap your arms and wiggle like a chicken!
• Fairy bread comes from Australia. It is white bread, covered in margarine and dipped in sprinkles.
• The big sash on a kimono is called an obi.
• Jalebi is an Indian dessert that is crispy on the outside and gooey inside.
• A fancy shawl dance is performed at powwows in parts of Canada and the United States. The dancer aims to look like a butterfly. 
• Pass the Parcel is a game from Great Britain where a small gift is wrapped in many layers of wrapping and passed around. The person who unwraps the last layer gets the gift.
• When dancing the tango, from Argentina, partners connect arms and walk along the floor to the music.
• It is believed that slurping up the longest Chinese noodle brings good luck!
