This Sunday is Family Literacy Day. If you’re looking for books to read this weekend for Literacy Day (or just for fun), read on for some ideas!

For Learning: Who Believes What

Reading a book is a great way to learn! Who Believes What is a book about families, people and their religions around the world. It explains five of the world’s major religions by population and shows what they have in common and their differences. These religions include Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. You can learn about different kinds of religions, or learn about your own!

For Laughs: Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild

Reading doesn’t have to be serious – it can be silly too! Pick up a book that will make you laugh out loud, like Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild. This newest book in the Dog Man series follows Dog Man, a hero who is part dog, part man as he tries to prove his innocence after being blamed for a crime he didn’t commit. (Or, if you haven’t read the rest of the series, you can try starting with the first book, Dog Man!)

For a Classic Read: The BFG

Family Literacy Day is perfect time to pick up a classic book you haven’t had a chance to read yet, like Roald Dahl’s The BFG. The BFG, short for The Big Friendly Giant, is about a girl named Sophie who gets swept away by a giant one day. However, this giant doesn’t eat people: he is a friendly giant who catches dreams, giving the good dreams to children and destroying the bad dreams.

Read It! The Peace Dragon

If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel great after reading, check out The Peace Dragon by Linda Ragsdale.

This book is about a young explorer who comes across a dragon who just wants the world to find peace. While on their journey together, the dragon shows the boy that it’s important to love, trust and embrace others for who they are, and not because of how they appear.
