Have you ever thought about helping the planet? It’s never too late to get involved, just ask six-year-old Aria! She’s been sharing her love for the planet on her blog, Give the Kids a Voice, for over a year.
Read on for more info about this cool kid!
chickaDEE: What made you start this blog? Aria: The blog is called Give The Kids A Voice because I wanted to share stories about kids from all over the world.
chickaDEE: What is the biggest change you think people can make to help the planet? Aria: Everyone knows that recycling helps save our environment, but there are still people who don’t do it. The important thing is to keep trying.
chickaDEE: If kids want to get involved in their own communities, how do they get started? Aria: Communication is important! You have to let people know that you want to help out. Tell a parent or a teacher, and I bet they’ll help you get started.
chickaDEE: What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day? Aria: My class is doing a community clean-up. Last year, my family and I started an Earth Day tradition of cleaning up the school garden. We’ll be doing this again today.
Aria is proof that no matter how young you are, you can still make a difference! How are you going to help the planet? Leave a comment below!
Canadian author Janet M. Whyte wrote this month’s space story, My Space Pet. chickaDEE talked to her about the story and how to make writing about space fun.
Why are space stories so much fun to write?
When I think of space, I see a place where anything can happen! People have already been to the Moon, and now we’re orbiting Earth on the International Space Station. What’s next? A mission to Mars? Who knows what the future may bring?
Tell us a little bit about this story. What’s the story about?
GILES, an electronic sitter robot, feels like he’s been replaced by Selena’s new robo-pet. He’s jealous of the space pet and keeps hiding it in weird places. Suddenly, a problem on the Moon base puts Selena and her brother in danger! Can the two robots find a way to work together?
What do you think happens next to these characters? What other adventures do you see them going on?
I can see Selena and Jem trying recipes from an old Earth cookbook and creating quite a stink! Since there are no fresh ingredients on the Moon base, everything is canned or in paste form. But will that stop them? When they substitute beets for apples and canned spinach for lettuce, their meals are sure to be messy, disgusting disasters.
If kids want to create their own space stories, what advice can you give them?
It’s a joy to write stories about space because you can stretch your imagination. Start with something you learn from your teacher, read in a book or see on a science show. Then dream up what might happen next. Science fiction lets you picture what might be, so just let your mind run free!
Author Caroline Adderson wrote a story in December’s chickaDEE called The Winter Challenge. The story is about Sam and Gig, a brother-and-sister team, that compete in a winter adventure challenge. Here’s what Caroline had to say about the story:
Q: What was the story fun to write? A: It was lots of fun to invent a winter challenge. I tried to imagine tasks that were quite ordinary, but could be turned into games, like snow shoveling. I also let my characters take over the story and find clever ways to succeed.
Q: What is it about stories around brothers and sisters that helps bring characters to life? A: In stories, sometimes sisters and brothers are pinned against each other. Maybe Sam and Gigi fight a lot, too, but in this story they needed to work together to win the challenge. I like how at first Sam doubts they can succeed but by the end of the story he’s the one encouraging his sister.
Q: Would you ever enter a winter race? Why or why not?
A: I love contests. I would enter for sure!
