In the summer issue of chickaDEE we printed “My Summer Scrapbook” with a fill-in-the-blank section called “Travel Time”. Unfortunately, we listed Africa as a country. Africa is a continent, not a country. We are sorry for this error and we hope you enjoyed the rest of the summer issue of chickaDEE.
Our special double-sized summer digest is ready and we think you’ll love it! Get ready for tons of puzzles, comics, recipes, quizzes and jokes to keep you busy this summer. Need a popsicle recipe to keep you cool? We got it! Need some jokes to make your family laugh during a road trip? We got that, too. And don’t forget to go online and take chickaDEE’s reader survey! It’s your chance to tell us how we’re doing and you’ll also be entered to win a cool bubble prize pack.
There are heroes all around you. From firemen to police officers, doctors, nurses and maybe even your next door neighbour! But did you know that animals can be heroes, too?
The Purina Animal Hall of Fame celebrates pet heroes each year. Have a look below for this year’s winners.
Becky Jo (Five-year-old Australian Shepherd/Border Collie cross from Edmonton, Alberta)
Becky Jo went to get help after her owner, Tracy fell off her horse. The dog found her way back to the house and ran in circles in the driveway while barking. She was trying to let Tracy’s husband, Butch, know that something was wrong! Becky Jo led Butch right back to Tracy. Tracy is all better now, and says she owes it all to her furry friend. What a smart pup!

Leo (Seven-month-old Biewer Yorkshire Terrier from Ottawa, Ontario)
Leo’s owner Brittany was asleep one night when Leo started barking really loud. Brittany was very confused when she woke up because it wasn’t like Leo to behave like this. But Leo wasn’t barking for fun, Brittany’s apartment was on fire, and Leo was trying to warn her! As soon as Brittany saw the fire, she ran out of the apartment with Leo to safety. Go Leo!

Skylar (Three-year-old Golden Retriever from Port Hope, ON)
Skylar and her owner Grace were walking in the woods one day, when all of a sudden, Skylar was curious about something ahead and started running towards it. Grace ended up falling on the ground and hurting herself as she chased her curious dog, and couldn’t get back up. She needed help! Grace and Skylar were all alone, and Grace was starting to worry as it became dark outside. A while later, Grace saw car headlights in the distance. Grace told Skylar to get the driver’s attention and lead him over, and that’s exactly what this smart pooch did! Thanks to Skylar, Grace was able to get the help she needed.

Aren’t these stories great? It really makes me think about how smart our animal friends are, and how much they care.
Do you know any animal heroes? Tell us your story in the comments section below!
The June issue is oh-so-great because it’s all about Canada! This year, Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday and festivities are planned across the country. In this issue, follow Chick and Dee on a super Canadian road trip, learn facts about the moose, and read a terrific graphic story about Canadian swimming hero, Marilyn Bell.
The May issue of chickaDEE is paws-itively amazing! Read all about the incredible talents and quirky personalities of some pretty cool canines. And if you like to make stuff, this is the issue for you. Whirl up a space smoothie, design a colourful T-shirt and create a whistling pan-flute. Have fun!
