Wacky Weather Fact!
Hello readers,
On page 11 of the December issue, we asked you to be a weather detective and find out if some wacky weather sayings were true or false.
Here was one of the wacky facts:
You can tell the temperature outside by listening to the chirps of crickets.
True or False?
The answer is TRUE! Warm weather makes a cricket chirp faster. You can count cricket chirps to figure out the temperature.
Here’s the formula from The Old Farmer’s Almanac:
To convert cricket chirps to degrees Fahrenheit, count number of chirps in 14 seconds then add 40 to get temperature.
Example: 30 chirps + 40 = 70° F
To convert cricket chirps to degrees Celsius, count number of chirps in 25 seconds, divide by 3, then add 4 to get temperature.
Example: 48 chirps /(divided by) 3 + 4 = 20° C
But since winter is coming, you’ll have to wait until spring to test it out!
Talk soon,
