Has it been rainy where you live? If April showers are keeping you inside, try making your own sun. Here’s how adults and kids can do this craft together:
Cut out a circle from yellow construction paper.
Have a grown-up trace a kid’s hand several times on colourful construction paper.
Cut out the handprints and glue them around the circle, fingers pointing out, to make the sun’s rays.
Draw a happy face on your sun and dream of sunny summer days soon to come.
I’d like you to meet Troy Wilson. He wrote the story “Cozy Cat” for April Chirp. I asked him a few questions about creating his stories. Check out what he had to say:
When you were a kid, what was your favourite picture book? I didn’t really have one single favourite. But I remember really enjoying I Wish That I Had Duck Feet by Theo Le Sieg and B. Tobey. Theo Le Sieg was actually Dr. Seuss writing under a different name, but I didn’t know that at the time.
Is there a kids’ book author you’d like to meet? I can’t stop at just one. I’d love to meet Ashley Spires, Mélanie Watt, Robert Munsch, Jon Klassen, and Jon Scieszka. Oh, and it’d be great to travel back in time and meet Dr. Seuss.
Where do you get ideas for your stories? My ideas come from everything and everywhere. I wrote about rain in “Cozy Cat” because it can get pretty rainy here in Victoria sometimes. And I made the cat dislike rain because 1) cats really don’t seem to like it very much, and 2) I don’t like it much, either. But I also know that lots of kids have fun playing in the rain, so I made sure that the cat’s owner was enjoying it.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? I like walking and hiking — if it’s not raining too hard, that is.
