Hi Owlkids Family,

Looking for fun ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home this year? Try one of these super sweet activities with your family!

1) Make a homemade heart card or a red and white confetti card with a nice message or a heart on the front of it.

2) Write a secret Valentine message using homemade invisible ink.

3) Draw your own tic tac toe or bingo game and use candy for pieces. The winner gets to eat the candy!

4) Make a chain of paper hearts that you can hang around the house.

5) Snack on a healthy treat of fruit and chocolate avocado dip.

6) Cut out giant paper hearts and place them around the house. Make up a game where you have to jump on all the hearts to get to the finish line.

7) Give the birds some love with a DIY tin can bird feeder craft.

10 Family-Friendly Winter Activities

Hi Owlkids Family!

Are you itching to take advantage of the chilly winter season? Here are some fun things for you to do!

1. Bundle up and go for a snowy hike through a forest.
2. Donate new or used items to a shelter or to families in need in your community.
3. Make a giant snow maze in a park.
4. Look for animal tracks and den holes in the ground.
5. Make a weather vane like this to learn about the direction of wind.
6. Have a family pajama day! Dedicate time to play board games and drink hot chocolate.
7. Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt. See how many different birds, trees, and footprints you can find.
8. Bake and decorate gingerbread cookies to look like people you know.
9. Spend a day doing fun crafts together, like this origami.
10. Build a snow wall and have an epic snowball battle!

BONUS: Of course, don’t forget the tried and true activities like skating, tobogganing, skiing, and everything else that makes winter wonderful!

Outdoor Fall Fun

Hi Parents,

Fall is the perfect time to get outside as a family before the weather starts to get ch-ch-chilly! And I don’t know if it’s because my home office is next to a window that faces a park and I get to look at trees all day or if it’s because we are taking more neighbourhood walks than ever before, but this fall seems to be extra-spectacular!

Here are some things we will be doing this month to take advantage of the colourful season.

Go on a Leaf Walk – Challenge your kid(s) to collect 5-10 different leaves from around the neighbourhood. The bigger and more colourful, the better. Then press the leaves between two pieces of waxed paper and hide them in the pages of a big heavy book. In a few weeks or month, open the book and look at the leaves together, trying to remember where each leaf was found.

Take a Tree Tour – Drive or walk to a location with lots of different trees and note all the colours that you see. Discuss the difference between tree that change colour in fall and those that do not. See how many of the same tree you can count.

Lay in a Leaf Pile – Let your kids bury you in a giant leaf pile, wait a few minutes, and then jump out at them. Take turns hiding in the pile and jumping out and also take turns making the leaf pile high again. Who can pile it the highest?

Make a Family Tree – Collect leaves and use them to create a big family tree. Write each person’s name on a leaf and tape or glue them onto a drawing of a tree with branches.

Hi Owlkids Family,

With COVID-19 restrictions, Halloween might look a little different this year where you live, but it’s still a great excuse to get dressed up and stir up some spooky fun!

Here are some tips for having a super fun and COVID-friendly Halloween.

• Turn one room in your home into a haunted house with fake cobwebs, ghosts, mummies, and other homemade decorations.
• Make a spooky spider snack.
• Go trick-or-treating to different rooms in your house.
• Try a magical potion experiment.
• Have a door decorating contest with your neighbours. 
• Hang treats from trees in your backyard and go on a scavenger hunt to find them.
• Learn about how gummy candies are made in this video.
• Host a Zoom party with costumed friends and family.
• Make a no-carve pumpkin like this or a fall leaf wreath like this.
• Fill a piñata with treats and take turns trying to hit it.
• Look for drive-through Halloween events in your area.
• Join a UNICEF walkathon and raise money for kids in need.
