chickaDEE’s Roominate Contest!
Hi readers!
I recently met a very cool person named Betinna Chen. Bettina, along with her friend, Alice Brooks, invented a line of DIY building toys with moving parts, called Roominate. These toys let you wire up motors and lights to create carousels, lamps and even windmills!
Would you like to know more about Bettina? Check out our interview with her below!
Alice and Bettina, inventors of Roominate.
chickaDEE: How old were you when you decided to become an engineer?
Bettina: I didn’t know anything about engineering until my junior year of high school, when I took a Physics class. It was one of the hardest classes I took in high school, but I loved it! There was so much amazing stuff to learn. After that, I had a feeling my future path might lead me to becoming an engineer.
chickaDEE: Did you like building things as a kid?
Bettina: I loved making things with my hands, whether that was through building toys or crafts. I spent hours building elaborate creations, like houses and spaceships with my building toys. I also loved crafting and often made gifts for family and friends. I’m not sure how cool my gifts were, but at the time I was pretty proud of them.
chickaDEE: Do you have advice for readers who want to become engineers when they grow up?
Bettina: One of the most important things to remember, whether you want to be an engineer or not, is to never give up. Alice and I had a lot of failed ideas before we even came up with Roominate. Even after that, we continued to have many challenges. But, we persevered and pressed forward, and I’ve never regretted a single moment. One of the best things for us has been seeing all the amazing creations that kids make with Roominate!
