Today we’re posting the final winning entry from OWL’s Story Writing Contest.
Today’s story was written by Alyssa.
A True Spy
So there I was. My parachute caught in a tree. Not a great way to start a mission. Ever since I’d started at S.P.Y. (Secret Program for the Young), I’d been messing up on missions. Once there was a mission where I was supposed to deliver a secret message to a house on a mountain. Let’s just say, I don’t think mountain goats like me.
Anyways, my new mission was to track down a missing Robo-Dog in the forest. I think I was assigned to do that to not wreck the team’s main assignment, which was searching for the E.V.I.L. base in another part of the forest. I unclipped my parachute and dropped to the ground. After an hour of following the Robo-Dog’s tracks, I sat down against a tree.
“Is that you, Jonathan?” I heard a voice say. It sounded like Jasmine, another thirteen-year-old spy.
“I’m over here!” I called. Agent Jasmine found me. “What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I got lost from the group,” she admitted. I smiled. Maybe I wasn’t the only spy who messed up now and then. I stood up and grabbed my backpack.
That’s when I noticed that there was a square of bark loose on a tree. After I tugged on it, it fell off, revealing a shiny red button. Jasmine stared wide-eyed at it. “What should we do?” she asked me. “Should we call the team?”
I thought for a moment. “No.” In an impulse, I pressed the button.
What was I thinking? A trapdoor opened on the ground, sending leaves and dirt flying everywhere. The E.V.I.L. base. It had to be. Reluctantly, Jasmine tiptoed down the metal staircase and I followed silently. At the end of a passageway, there was a steel door. “Please insert identification card into slot,” a machine instructed. Jasmine took out a fake I.D. card from her backpack and slid it into the slot. The steel door screeched open.
We slipped down the hallways of the hidden enemy base quietly. Suddenly we heard someone coming. “Hide, Jasmine!” I whispered frantically. “I’m going to get all their secret information from the Main Computer!” Jasmine dove behind a large houseplant. I cut through a room and skid down a staircase with a sign above it: ‘Main Computer, Authorized Personnel Only’. Fortunately, nobody was in there. I sat down at the big black chair. “Scan fingerprint for access,” said the computer.
My GadgetPhone3000 printed out a copy of Dr. Disaster’s fingerprint. He runs E.V.I.L., and is trying to destroy the world. I laid the copy on the scanner, gained access to the system, and added all the classified files onto a microchip. Jasmine and I met up by the door and left.
At the S.P.Y. base the next day Jasmine and I were awarded with medals. “Ready for your next mission?” the Boss asked. Jasmine and I smiled. An accidental mission had never gone so well. I, Agent Jonathan, was finally a true spy.
