From the OWL Vault
Fun fact: when I tell people my age that I work at OWL, one of the first things I hear is, “Oh cool! Do they still have those ‘Whatsit’ puzzles on the back?”
I’m sure you guys know the puzzles I’m talking about. They feature six super close-up photos of things, and you have to guess what they are. For several years, these were on the back cover of every issue of OWL.
Just for fun, I thought we’d take a blast to the past and check out a classic puzzle from 26 years ago. Here you go (click on the image to make it larger):
Fun, huh? And tough! Check the comments section below for the answers.
But hang on a second: why show a “Whatsit” from 26 years ago? Why not 25 or 18 or 31? Well, there’s a perfectly awesome reason for this. As far as I can tell, the puzzle above — from the February 1983 issue of OWL — is the very first of its kind ever published.
Nowadays, of course, OWL publishes the puzzles every so often, and chickaDEE publishes them in the front of every magazine. And it all started
with the puzzle above. Cool!
That’s it for me this week, guys. Keep sending in questions and comments, and I’ll try to do a mailbag really soon.
