From the OWL Vault: Wow Shot Edition
We might as well call this blog post “EAotW #1” (“Editor Art of the Week #1”). That’s because the photo below is from my recent vacation to Cornwall, England. Also, I’m in it!
Check it out (note: I’m the one on the left!):
Now, the piece of art I’m standing next to is very cool — it’s called WEEE Man, and it resides at an amazing placed called the Eden Project. But that’s not all. The WEEE Man was featured in “Wow Shot” when I first started editing OWL!
Here’s what we told you about WEEE Man at the time:
“His name stands for Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment, and he stands 7 m (23 ft.) tall. This gigantic art piece is built from the amount of electronic garbage — like cellphones, computer screens, and TVs — an average citizen of the United Kingdom will throw away in his or her lifetime.”
Neat, huh? What’s coolest about all of this is that I had no idea WEEE Man was going to be at the Eden Project until I was standing right next to it. At that point, I knew I had to pose for a photo and share it with you guys.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should do EAotW more often!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow Craig! That is a big robot-thing! And you are sooooo much different than I pictured!
Marissa 😛
Wow, that’s awesome! 🙂
CooL picture…
It’s too bad about the garbage though.. 🙁
What do you, personally think about reducing your ecological footprint? Like what’s the best way to do so?
that’s Kool but it’s sad that we waste that much!
So cool! its to bad we waste so much though.
It really makes you think about how much you are throwing out!
Good points, guys! It’s really humbling to stand under WEEE Man and think that one person could create so much e-waste over a lifetime.
Also, that’s funny, Marissa! Normally my eyes are a lot more open than that. It was really bright that day!
Wow that is so cool. Well i wanted to ask you about this October 1977 Owl magasine my mother recently found. Its really cool to read. The first story is about skateboarding. I love skateboarding. My mother said How owl was always concerned about safety. The price of the magazine is .75 cents. Owl is written in bold red lettering and it has a totem pole face on the cover of the magazine. I receive your magasine every month. Really fun to play the games. Hope you can help. thanks Kilby Sudbury, Ontario
Lol I agree with Marissa on that one Craig! But that is sooo sad. I would never even dare to throw away an electronic! If it works I sell it if not I take it to somewhere where they recycle it!
Hi Kilby. Thanks for the comment. I’d love to help you out if I can. What would you like to know about that issue?
Wow, I just looked at it like a piece of art work. Never thought about the garbage, just that it was recycling!
Urg….I have to go back to skool tomorrow……Im sorta excited but sad at the same time……anyone else back yet?
Marissa 😛
PS….we always recycle our electronics or trade them in or something….it is so sad about all of our aste just on electronics!
whoops……waste…not aste!
Hey Craig,
I got the book “Not Your Typical Book about the environment” by Elin Kelsey from the library recently, and have been reading it ever since! ….
I love it! It’s sooo fasinating…
Like who knew that it take 25 bath-tubs of water to grow enough cotton to make ONE (and only one) t-shirt! I bet if people knew that they’d be more concerned about the amount of clothes that they buy.
If anyone’s looking for a good, educating book I would strongly reccomend “Not Your Typical Book about the environment” !!! 🙂
Owl for 75 cents? Wicked! Hey Craig, owl should have another article about skateboarding. Skateboarding is awesome. You could do an issue with all diffrent sports.
I’m back at school now tooo!!
Ya Marissa
today was my first day too
That’s pretty cool.
I’m going to sound like an otaku right now even though it’s a show I don’t even like that much but…..
WEEE Man looks a bit like Ryuk from Death Note.
Craig,
Do you have any other recommendations for books? [Possibly published by OWL?].
Thanks a loT! 🙂
