Goin’ for Gold
Hey all. Leading up to the Vancouver Winter Games, there was a lot of talk about Canada winning gold on home soil for the first time. The reason for that is simple: Canada had hosted the Olympics twice, and hadn’t been able to snag a gold once in either Games.
So, long story short, I was a little worried. I figured that all the stories and commercials would put a lot of pressure on Canada’s athletes. Not only would they be trying to beat the best in the world — they’d also be trying to change history.
But you know who wasn’t worried? The athletes! Sunday night, Alexandre Bilodeau of Rosemère, Quebec (pictured above), won men’s moguls to give Canada gold on Canadian soil for the first time! If you didn’t see it, you can watch it here.
Also, if you’re wondering what it looks like to ski down a moguls run, just check out the following YouTube clip:

Wow! Talk about a bumpy ride, huh?
The Olympics are on until February 28, and I’m sure there are a lot more great performances to come. I’ll keep you updated on my favourite moments here on the OWL blog, and make sure to chime in with your own as well.
You can keep track of all the medals — and the medal standings — at the Vancouver 2010 website. As of right now, Canada is in fourth place with four total medals. Nice job, Canada!
Talk to you later.

Love the video!
I watched Bilodeau win the the medal!
Appartently, when they land after doing a flip off the ramp in the middle of slope, the impact on their knees is like they just jumped off a 2-storey building!
I heard that too, Katie! Isn’t that crazy?
Yeah!
Did you see it on the “Superbodies” segment?
i think we won another gold medal in boarder cross
I watched when canada won another gold medal in boarder cross.
I saw the thing about mogul skiers to! Their leg muscles are something like forty or fifty percent larger than normal!
Hannah, we did! Women’s Snowboardcross!
That’s AWESOME! XD Canada totally rocks! XD
YAY! ANOTHER MEDAL! (does a happy dance) we rock!
Is RAothW tomorrow?
Hey,did you see the skijumping guy that landed on his back?,ouch! I feel so bad for him, he had to be lifted away by helicopter!
Woo, Alex! But we should still remember the people who won silver or bronze or even the people who didi’t get a medal. They all worked really hard to get here, and we should be proud of them.
Good point, Hailey! All the athletes deserve our respect and admiration â they’re all amazing!
Just to let you know Craig, that the olympics go until the 28th, they don’t end today. I love Alex Bilodeau! Does anyone else here live in Vancouver?
Nice catch, Hailey. I’ve changed it in the blog now so it’s the correct date.
Uhhh, actualy, I said that, but…
We’re in fourth place?! That’s so awesome! Canada has been doing great at the Olympics!
