If I Could Enter the Contests…
One of the most common letters I get at OWL goes something like this: ”Put more contests in the magazine… PLEASE!” And I can see why. Contests are great. Take the ones from the May issue, for example. Sudoku? Poetry? Sign me up. That stuff is fun!
Now for some hilarity. Let’s just say I could enter the OWL contests for a second. (Note: I’m a little old to enter. But just a little…) Anyway, if I could enter OWL’s Scrabble Poetry Contest, I might go with a haiku.
Here’s my best effort:
think like a wind sock
and soar like some wonderful
white elephant moth
POETIC LICENCE ALERT! It turns out there’s no such thing as an elephant moth. But there is such a thing as an elephant hawk moth. (It’s just not white.) Which just goes to prove once again that you learn something new every day.
Anyone else entering the poetry contest? Anyone else write poetry, period? Fill me in!
Talk to you later.

I like to write Haikus
guess what? My class is studying about poetry! My favorite kind of poetry is limerick poetry. A limerick is a five line poem, usually silly or funny, and has a certain beat to it.
See if you can find the beat of the one I made up.
The man who went on the moon,
just happened to eat with a spoon.
He sometimes used a fork,
until he found a cork,
Now he uses chopsticks in June.
Like it?
Hey Craig,
I’m pretty into poetry too.. scratch that, I’m into trying NEW THINGS. I’ve been trying to write some genius poem that will get noticed, and then I’ll be famous but all I’m getting is poems about the amount of grease in french fries. Maybe I’m not a poet…
Ah well, I try.
Nice one, Madison! I tried writing a limerick with the words given in the Scrabble Poetry Contest, but ended up writing a haiku instead. Not a lot of poetry is meant to be funny, and that’s what makes limericks great.
Also, Joolz, maybe you’re just being too ******* yourself! Everybody has to start somewhere. One of my first poems was about eating ice cream and seeing the man on the moon in my spoon. (Seriously!)
Joolz, Madison, I like to write poems too! I wrote one about a flying seagull. It brings out the graceful side of seagulls flying. Too bad I can’t find the paper I wrote it on…. When I find it I will post it on the comments for this blog entry, so stay tuned.
Oh, well in that case I suppose I will try writing poems again! Oh and nice idea for your first poem! 🙂
hey Craig,
For the poetry contest, are you aloud to add the letter s or end it in ing, y or ed?
Hey Hannah. Yup, you can add “s” to make nouns plural, and end words in “ing,” “y,” or “ed.” No problem!
