Reader Interview: Improv Camp

Have you ever been to improv camp?

Improv (short for improvisation) is a type of comedy theatre where you and your fellow actors make up your jokes on the fly. It’s full of wacky, creative, confidence-building fun.

OWL reader Jinoo went to Second City’s Adventuretown Camp in Toronto, an improv camp for kids, and he’s here to tell you all about it. Take it away, Jinoo!

1. Why did you decide to go to an improv camp?
I decided to go to an improv camp, the first time because my parents wanted me to do a march break camp, and they thought that I would enjoy it. I really enjoyed it and came back the next march break and the following two summers.

2. What was your favourite thing about it?
My favourite thing about improv camp is that you can be anybody and anything and it is a really supportive environment where you can learn to do improv and not hold back or have any reservations.

3. What did you learn while you were there?
While I was at Second City, I learned most of what I know about acting and performing, as well as a lot of skills that are necessary to work as a team. I learned how to say yes, use puppets, create different emotions, create characters, and I also learned about genres and characters and creating satirical jokes.

4. Would you recommend a comedy or improv camp to other kids?
I would highly recommend improv camp to another kid, because it is an experience that is difficult not to enjoy. My personal experience is that I am always laughing or smiling, everybody is always friends with each other, you learn a ton of stuff about improvising and you get a wonderful experience that is unlike anything I have ever done.
