Why Do Leaves Change Colours?
I love seeing the autumn leaves this time of year! Do you know why leaves change colours in the fall? The main reason is because of an ingredient in tree leaves called chlorophyll (say: KLOR-ah-fil). Chlorophyll captures sunlight so the tree can make its own food. It also hides the other colours in the leaves. When fall comes and there is less sunlight, the chlorophyll breaks down. That’s when the beautiful reds, yellows and oranges come out!
