Meet the Narwhal!
Hi readers,
The narwhal is the Animal of the Month in the December issue of chickaDEE!
Did you know that narwhals spend up to five months under sea ice? Here are some other cool facts about these creatures!
- Narwhals can dive 1.5 miles (2.4 km) deep in the ocean.
- They change colour as they get older! Baby narwhals are blue-gray, young-adults are blue-black, adults are light gray and old narwhals are mostly white.
- The narwhal’s tusk is actually a large tooth! This tooth can grow to be taller than an adult basketball player!
Check out this cool video of a narwhal and a beluga whale!
Talk to you soon!

Hi, Melissa,
I am wondering if you can provide scientific reference about Narwhal can dive to 2400 meters. The deepest record I can found is TDR > 2000 meters since instrument maxed out. I would really appreciate you can provide the evidence for 2400 meter diving record.
Best
Wen
Hi Wen,
Thanks for writing in, and pointing this out. According to our experts, they can dive to
1524 m (5000 ft.) below sea level. Sorry for the confusion!
Best wishes,
The chickaDEE Team
