Meiofauna In Action
Hi readers,
In the June issue, we told you about meiofauna, microscopic creatures that live in the sand and gravel of beaches and ocean floors.
Take a closer look at a tardigrade, also called a water bear, in this video.
So tiny but so cool! Lots of creatures survive by eating the tiny meiofauna including the sand bubbler crab, who scoops up sands into it’s mouth, eats the meiofauna, then spits out the sand in a ball.
Check out this bonus video of a crab in action!

Hi Ashley,
Just wondering about the videos on mud dragons and gastrotrich as mentioned in the magazine? (By the way, the crab is scooping up sand and spitting out a sand ball, not gravel and dirt ball.)
Thanks for a great magazine!
Thanks for pointing that out, Jack! We’ve corrected it. 🙂
Cool! I need to visit Australia to see that in real life
travel girl, I have been to Australia. It is really cool up close!?
Wow! It looks so cool up close! Especially the “water bear”
By the way Ashley, once I went scuba diving, and found a ” water bear”. I discovered that it can become translucent if taken out of water. (I want to be a scientist when I grow up)
Wow! You found a water bear? So cool!
