MOVIE NEWS: Green Lantern

Another comic book movie? You bet. In fact, I’m starting to think the whole genre may even deserve its own section on the blog! This time, it’s Green Lantern, which just hit theatres today. I caught a sneak peek earlier this week, and I’m here to share my thoughts.
For those of you not familiar, Green Lantern is based on the comic of the same name. While there have been many variations throughout the comic’s history, the film focuses on the character of Hal Jordan, a pilot who becomes the first human ever selected to join the Green Lantern Corps.
With incredible super powers each member receives from a ring, the Green Lanterns have been protecting the universe from evil for centuries. But now, a new enemy called Parallax is threatening to destroy the galaxy, and Hal may be the only one who can stop Parallax and save the universe. But first, he must learn to overcome his fears and harness the power of the ring.
Here are a few observations about the movie:
1) It’s in your face. From the special effects to the sound effects, everything in this movie is big and bold. The final battle scene between Hal Jordan and Parallax, in particular, is extremely loud and incredibly intense. But even during some other scenes, a few people jumped right out of their seats.
2) It’s kind of creepy. This flick is full of seriously evil characters, like Parallax. There’s also Hammond Hector, a scientist who literally goes mad after being infected with some alien goop. Even some of the good guys are eerie, like the ancient Guardians of the Green Lanterns. Then again, I’ve just always been spooked by alien creatures, and there’s a lot of them in this film.
3) It makes you wish you had a super-powered ring. Well, it made me want one, anyway! Watching Hal and the other Green Lanterns create glowing green race tracks and airplanes out of thin air was pretty awesome — especially in 3-D. And I couldn’t help but imagine what I would create if I had my own super-powered ring…
Overall, I thought this movie was fun, mainly because of the special effects and the awesome powers that the Green Lanterns have.
However, Green Lantern is rated PG (PG-13 in the U.S.) and, as I said above, it has some scary scenes, not to mention creepy creatures. If that’s not your thing, maybe try Mr. Popper’s Penguins or Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, which are both in theatres now, too!

You guys definitely aren’t alone in that. I don’t think this movie did too well at the box office. Funnily enough, though, they’re already working on Green Lantern 2!
