MOVIE NEWS: Inkheart
Hands up if you’ve read Inkheart, Inkspell, or Inkdeath, the enormously popular Ink-Trilogy by author Cornelia Funke. Okay, everyone got their hands up? Good. A confession: mine isn’t up. That’s right. I’m not proud of it, but I haven’t read a single book in the series.
However, I did get a chance to see the movie adaptation of Inkheart this week, and I’m here to humbly share my thoughts on it. Note: I’ll try not to give too much away, but if you don’t want to know anything about the movie, stop reading… now.
For those of you who don’t know, Inkheart is about a father-daughter duo (Meggie and Mo) with a particularly cool power: whatever they read aloud comes to life. This sounds like fun, sure, but it comes with some strange and scary consequences — for one thing, not everyone in books is nice and friendly.
Here are a few observations about the movie:
1) Actor Brendan Fraser plays the part of Mo pretty well. Maybe this is because Cornelia Funke apparently had him in mind when she was writing the character in the first place!
2) The first narrow escape 15 minutes into the movie is very exciting.
3) The 15th narrow escape (I’m estimating here) 90 minutes into the movie was a little less so. Seriously, Meggie and Mo are either escaping, getting captured, or being jailed the entire movie. It’s hard to keep up.
4) Adapting a book into a movie must be one of the hardest things for a writer to do. At times, it seemed like there were about 100 characters on screen at once — most of whom I hardly knew or understood at all. I can imagine it made a lot more sense in the book, where the author had as much time as she wanted to develop characters.
Overall, I think this movie was a little messy, but quite a bit of fun. Like I said, it’s got to be tough to fit thick, multi-layered books into 100 minutes of screen time.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve read the books and if you plan to see the movie. And, if you see it this weekend, let me know what you thought. It opens today!
Bye for now!

Hmmm! Looks interesting! My friend just got Inkdeath from the library, and says it`s pretty good so far.And it has 81 CHAPTERS! 81!!!
Yeah, but a lot of those 81 chapters are short…
When I started reading Inkheart, it was supposed to be released March 2007! I started reading it, then I finally found out it wasn’t coming out for a while. I stopped reading, never finished. I hope to read it when I get the chance.
Who here has heard of “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. We’re reading it right now at school in English class for novel studies. It’s a really good book. I highly recommend it.
I am not really into magic……………..
I definitely won’t watch the movie. Sorry, Inkheart fans.
I might watch it but I would want to read the book first. My friend said it was realy good and got our student teacher reading it and he said it was good to so i might read it.
Hey,Katie! No,I`ve never heard of it,but I think you`ll know this one.’Eragon’.Heard of it? It`s a very popular book, and I reccomend it to people who like adventure, magic and fantasy books.
Yeah. I read the book. I saw the movie last night when it came out! I saw it for my friends birthday. Man, the book was SO different then the movie! Does anyone like reading Harry Potter? I LUV those books!
Yes I love Harry Potter… though I’m only at the start of the 2nd book.
Lexi, do you like the Harry Potter books? I’m guessing no because you said you don’t like books with magic in them
Nope Never read the books.
But are all those 3 books in one movie?
My E.L.A. teacher read the book the giver he says it is good (gonna read it)!
For reading Olympics last year me and my team came in 2 out of the whole city (I was the captain)! If you guys have not read the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH GO READ IT!
The best book I ever read! They should make a movie of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
I LOVE Harry Potter, great books!
Yeah, I’ve heard of Eragon, but only seen the movie. I’m sure the book is better. I’ve never gotten around to reading it,though.
I read The Globe and Mail today, the reviewer for that newpaper gave Inkheart 2stars, which I probably won’t see it, but you never know.
2 stars?
My favourite HP book IS the second one. Craig, have you read them, and, if so, which are your favourites
I think my favourite Harry Potter book is also the second one, even though I haven’t finished the series yet.
It’s impossible they put all the Inkheart books in the movie, because the third one hadn’t come out until October 2008, and the movie was probably already finished, because it took a couple years to make.
Inkheart,Inkspell and Inkdeath were really good.
They are one of my favourite series.
i’ve read inkheart and inkspell, and they’re so good! i love them! the movie was good, but not as good as the books. i need to read inkdeath soon, like, really soon! i love the Harry Potter books, the third one is my favorite.
