MOVIE NEWS: New Moon
Hey, guys! There are popular movies… and then are huge movie events. The movie I saw this week, New Moon, belongs in the second category. Everyone seems to be talking about it, screenings sold out weeks in advance, and so on. It’s huge! But is it worth all the hype? That’s up for debate.
When I reviewed Twilight on the blog last year, I guessed there were a lot of you who weren’t familiar with the story. By now I’m guessing almost everyone knows it by heart (whether you like it or not). But, just in case, here’s a quick catch-up:
In the first film, Bella (played by Kristen Stewart) moves to a small town in Washington and falls in love with a big-time vampire named Edward (Robert Pattinson). Now, in New Moon, everything should be fine, right? Wrong. Edward moves away and Bella is devastated. But at least that gives her time to hang out with her werewolf friend, Jacob (Taylor Lautner)!
Here are three thoughts on the movie (brought to you by myself and OWL’s awesome assistant editor Kendra, who saw the movie as well):
1) It’s complex! As the series goes on, more and more characters are being introduced, and the movie doesn’t have a ton of time to make sure viewers are caught up. You might find yourself a little confused during a few scenes — especially the beginning one.
2) It’s new and improved! You can tell right off that New Moon had a bigger budget than Twilight. The special effects are better, the supporting actors are better, even the makeup is better! We are happy to report that the vampires look less like they’ve been doused in flour here.
3) It’s… shirtless? As far as we know, it’s not super-warm in Washington state during the school year (in Seattle right now it’s 9°C and rainy). So, um, why do none of the men in this movie wear shirts? Edward, Jacob, Jacob’s buddies… no one likes wearing shirts. Sure, they’re super-powered, but it gets a little weird. You think the other folks in Forks would begin to wonder.
Anyway, as with the last movie in the series, New Moon is going to be a big hit with Twilight fans. It’s alternately serious, silly, tense, action-packed, etc. It has something for everyone [who likes Twilight]. If you’re not already a fan, though, this movie probably won’t change your mind.
Also as with the last movie in the series, a small warning: New Moon is PG in Canada (PG-13 in the U.S.) and has some violent parts. If that’s not your thing, maybe check out Planet 51 this weekend instead.

Apparently all the news and stuff say it’s not that great. I think the movies not going to be that good because since twilight was such a big hit they’re gonna exaggerate the whole movie.
I personally highly dislike Twilight. It`s kinda…well…the vampires don`t even have fangs! SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!

it’s strange, but mostly when you talk to people who don’t like twilight its the ones who haven’t even read it. the first two books are fantastic, and i haven’t read the last two yet.
I’m surprised to see that a whole bunch of Twilight lovers haven’t already descended on this post like a pack of vultures…:)

I watched the first movie on Friday night just to see what it was like.
I wouldn’t want to watch it again.
I think my dad liked it more than me. I thought he’d find it even weirder than I do.
I also found in the first movie that I couldn’t get over how weirdly Edward talks.
for answering your note about the shirts, Jacob and his friends don’t wear shirts because they are werewolfs, and werewolfs always have an actual fever, so they are hot. and hot. 🙂

The ending is brutal everyone in the theater just GROANED.
The guys who do all the laws were cast PERFECTLY! ! ! ! !
I found the story easy to follow. And that is saying something because I have not read the books other than the first one and the movie cut out for ten minutes.
The girl vampire with the orange hair was awsome when she was fighting the werewolf. Every now and then she would just stop and just look at the camera and it was like BOOM!
Ya New Moon doesn’t look as good as twilight
You’re right Christi, Twilight was way better than New Moon. I just saw the movie, I guess I underestimated it. I rate it 7 out of 10 the beginning and the end was good but the middle was boring and the plot wasn’t that good. The last line leaves you with suspense even though I know what the answer is.
