MOVIE NEWS: Shorts
How ’bout that blog title, huh? It’s a little preposterous, don’t you think? I mean, Shorts has been in theatres for a week and a half already. This is more like “MOVIE OLDS” or “MOVIE SORT OF NEWS.” But I figured both of those titles would look weird, so I just went with the usual.
In any case, I caught a screening of the movie last night, and I’m here to share my thoughts. For those who don’t know, the movie is about a bunch of people who stumble upon a very magical rock. Long story short: if you hold the rock and make a wish, it comes true. But the characters in Shorts soon figure out that’s not always a good thing.
Here are some observations about the movie:
1) The story is told in a series of short, out-of-order episodes. Hence the name: Shorts! This allowed the filmmakers to focus on different characters at different times. It worked pretty well, and would’ve been even better except…
2) I don’t know about you guys, but where I grew up some kids had nicknames, and some didn’t. That’s partly how we told each other apart. In Shorts, just about everyone has a nickname (or at least a very strange name). Seriously: Toe, Nose, Loogie, Lug, Laser, etc. It kind of made them all blend together a little.
3) Director Robert Rodriguez has a lot of kids. I know because a ton of them are in this movie. In fact, the director’s three sons — Rebel, Racer, and Rocket — all had parts. Also, I kind of wish Robert was my dad, because 1) I’d be in the movie, too, and 2) My name might be Robot!
4) Making a wish is harder than it seems. Every time someone says something seemingly simple, it backfires. For instance, one character says “I wish I could fly,” and — poof! — he can fly! But the bad news is he’s a bird now and can no longer talk to his friends. One character wishes to be closer to someone and — poof! — they’re literally joined at the hip, sharing one pair of legs. It makes you wonder: what would you wish for? It’d have to be pretty specific.
Overall, I liked the movie. It had lots of laughs and some good messages, including the classic, “Be careful what you wish for — it just might come true.” There are some pretty gross snot jokes, but they luckily don’t overpower the rest of the movie.
That’s it for me, folks. I’ll be back on Friday with a Reverse Mailbag. Talk to you then.
