MOVIE NEWS: Twilight
Here’s a pop quiz for all you bookish types. It’s like 20 Questions, except since you can’t ask the questions, I’ll just give you some clues. Here goes: I’m thinking of a book series. It’s enormously popular, has a recently published final book, features werewolves in a supporting role, and has over 17 million books in print. What series am I thinking about?
If you guessed Harry Potter… bzzt! Sorry! I’m thinking about Twilight. The two series have tons of similarities. And, as of today, both have popular movie franchises. I caught a sneak preview of Twilight the other night and I’m here to give you the goods.
For those unfamiliar with the books (and I’m guessing there’s a few of you), it’s the story of a girl named Bella who moves to Washington and falls in love with — uh oh — a vampire. She doesn’t know it at first but it turns out the vampire, Edward, is a good guy, and she doesn’t seem to mind anyway.
Three cheers!
Speaking of “three,” here are three quick observations about the movie (without giving too much away):
1) It’s funny!
2) It’s not always supposed to be funny.
3) In the book, the good-guy vampires are described as pale and supremely good-looking. In the movie, they just look a little silly — like they’ve been baking bread from scratch for hours and are covered in flour.
Overall, I think fans of the books will really like this movie. The actors playing Edward and Bella do a good job, and they’re definitely planning more movies. An important point, though: most of the vampires in Twilight are good and non-violent, but not all of them. The movie is rated PG in Canada (PG-13 in the U.S.) and has some violent parts.
And that’s it, guys! Hope you had a great week and have an awesome weekend planned. Talk to you soon.

I’m going to go see it with my girlfriend next week!
Hey Craig. I’ve always loved your blog, but ever since that puppy cam… well, you could say I’m addicted. Anyway, what’s up with all the new about vampires these days? Two days ago, I read in the news that the most popular Halloween costume this year was vampire. Then, yesterday I heard about vampire bats on the radio. I learned that they do a lot of their hunting by running around on the ground, sneaking up on sleeping animals and biting them on the ankle. And now today, on your blog. More about vampires. Hmm. I think I might sleep with a clove of garlic tonight…
Ewwwwww!
I HATE “Twilight”!
I want to read the book SOOOOO bad!
I am SO not interested in the Twilight books. In fact, I hate and despise them. The content is totally pointless, and ugghh…it’s just disgusting.
your just in a daja vu moment .It will end pretty soon probaly
i’ve never read any of the twilight books or seen the movie, but i think it would be interesting.
I watched the movie on November 21st and I’ve read all the books. It’s a really good series, my favourite: Breaking Dawn. Stephenie Meyer was in the movie, which I found pretty cool!
I totally agree, Lexi.
No offense to anyone who likes them.
Sinead and Katie, could you give me some ideas for a story and some advice?
ok, Kennedy, this is what i do, and i’m sure Katie has her own methods. but what i do is i just, um, you know what? i’m not sure what i do to get ideas. ideas just hit me. in the weirdest ways to. you get ideas in the bathroom, when your walking or watching tv, and and in the middle of the night especially. the idea i’m super exited about right now, (i’ll send in some of it later) i got when i was just going to go to bed. (around quarter to midnight, yeah i stay up late, but most of it is reading) but one thing i know is to carry around at least one pencil and at least one piece of paper. (or you hand. my mom thinks it’s dumb t write on you hand, but i think it’s ((this is gonna be lame)) HANDy! hahahahahahahaha! *sigh* that’s not funny is it?) to write your idea on. write down every idea you get. you might think it’s lame later, but in the future it might give you a cooler idea. and when your writing, just write as if your writing for your self. if you worry to much about what other people think, you wont like your story AT ALL! trust me i know. i’ve made that mistake. if you get tired or get writers block, just walk away for a while. come back to it later. it’ll still be there. and once you’ve rested your brain a bit, you’ll have all sorts of new ideas. and if your story just kind’ov walks or runs away from the original plot line, let it. sometimes the story really hates the way your writing it and has this awesome idea you never thought of and it just HAS to show you what it thought of. but first it needs to take you away from the original idea you had to work in it’s fabulous idea. the story has it’s own imagination, and i’m not saying it’s better then yours, but sometimes when you have a fantastic idea, you find it hard to see anyway to stray away from it. but the story has ideas. i know, i know, i sound like a crazy old nutter, but i think you have to be at least a little crazy to write a story. just a little. but to get anyone to read it, it has to be interesting and cool. and the best way to write interesting and cool, you have to be a little crazy. and that’s it, i guess. i cant really think of anything to add. OH! write about what you know and find interesting. if you write about stuff you know and you think your subjects are interesting, you story will rock. so, to sum up, take a writing utensil and paper wherever you go, keep all ideas, it’s ok to walk away from the story for a little, the story has it’s own ideas, you have to be slightly crazy, and you have to write what you know. that’s it. now write!
wow, that’s LOOOOONG!
Kennedy, my advice to you is write about things you like and you find interesting. If it’s something you are not good at describing and that you do not find the most fascinating, you probably shouldn’t write about it.
Second of all, read, and read, and read, and read. And did I mention, read? What I’m saying is reading helps A LOT. I love reading and I’m a good reader. It makes my writing better.
Third thing(which ties in to #2), use terms and words that you find in books. Just make sure they all make sense.
Work hard at language classes, learn about paragraphs and that stuff.
Those are a few things that help with writing good stories, essays and poems.
Today at school, it seemed like everybody watched the twilight movie. Why do people like it so much?????????????????????????????????????????? Even my teacher watched it, believe it or not. It’s kind of creepy.
BTW, did anybody receive the December 2008 issue of OWL?
Not yet. Thanx for the advice guys!
NO!!!! i want it right now!!!!!!!!!!!1 please give me the December issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with Sinead on the writing tips. Ideas jump at me at the most inconveniant times.
The weirdest time was when I was writing a test.
Part of my idea for a “Sidesteppers” comic is in the December OWL issue. I’d say it right now, but I won’t spoil it for Sinead; that wouldn’t be fair.
I LOVE TWILIGHT! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I dunno about Twilight. That is NOT the type of book I like, and frankly, I don’t go to theaters much anyway. And as Katie sais, no offence to anyone who likes them. I mean, thats got to be a lot, since the books are bestsellers. Does anyone like Kenneth Oppel? I LOVE THOSE BOOKS!!
