MOVIE NEWS: Yogi Bear vs. Tron: Legacy
Can you believe it, OWL readers? Two movie reviews on the same day! I could do an individual post for each, but that would be weird (wouldn’t it?). Besides, when I started to think about it, Yogi Bear and Tron: Legacy (both hitting theatres today) have a lot in common:
- Both are new chapters in age-old franchises (Yogi has been around in cartoon form since 1958 and the first Tron movie came out in 1982);
- Both feature copious amounts of computer-generated effects; and
- Both are being released in 3-D.
So, I thought, why not talk about them head-to-head, as we’ve occasionally done in the “What’s Hot” section in OWL? Why not indeed!
On with the show!
| Yogi Bear
The story: Yogi Bear has a simple life of stealing picnic (say: “pic-a-nic”) baskets in Jellystone Park. But when an evil mayor plans to shut down the park, Yogi — alongside his little friend, Boo-Boo — needs to team up with Ranger Smith in order to save it. The special effects: The filmmakers had three options in filming this: 1) animate the whole thing, as in the classic cartoon; 2) use live people and live animals, as in the Cats & Dogs movies; or 3) a combination of both. They went for the third option: Yogi and Boo-Boo are animated in digital computer graphics, and everything else is live action. The first time Yogi talks to Ranger Smith, it’s… a little weird. But after that the two worlds blend pretty seamlessly. The bottom line: This movie is seriously goofy, and I think younger viewers especially will enjoy that about it. Being a fan of the original cartoon, I can also say the voice acting of Yogi and Boo-Boo (Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, respectively) is totally spot-on. |
Tron: Legacy
The story: Sam Flinn has a simple life of riding motorcycles and pulling high-tech pranks. But when an evil computer program named Clu sucks him into a parallel cybernetic universe, Sam — alongside his father, Kevin — needs to fight back to save the world. The special effects: As you would guess about a movie set in a strange, pitch-black computer-generated world, computer-generated special effects could make or break this movie. Lucky for us, they’re done extremely well. From self-generating outfits with luminescent racing stripes to huge, flying M-shaped ships (also luminescent), Tron: Legacy delivers everything it promises. Very cool. (That’s my two-word review, by the way: Very cool.) The bottom line: Did I mention this movie is very cool? It is. However, it’s not for everyone. It’s pretty dark (literally and moodily) and there’s some sci-fi/fantasy violence as well. The story can also get bogged down a bit at times. But it’s still cool. No worries there. |
So there you have it. And now I put the question to you, OWL blog readers: which of these flicks are you more interested in? Let me know in the comments below. I’m looking forward to your answers!
Talk to you next week.

I am soooo going to see Tron Legacy. On the other hand, i want to see Yogi Bear too. I love Owl.Dont remind me about Highlights please.
i love Yogi Bear!!! But Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part one is the BEST!
HI,personally i think TRON LEGACY would be better but i wouldnât mind watching YOGI BEAR with my sisters the previews on tv say itâs pretty funny. And they also say that TRON LEGACY is suppost to have lots of action or something like that.
Looking forward to watching them both especially TRON LEGACY
At first Yogi Bear looked kinda dorky and pointless… but I think now that it wouldn’t be to bad. Tron: Legacy sounds cool (I’m a real sucker for glowing things on a dark background), but I probably won’t see either of these movies.
I saw Yogi bear and it was so funny! I am not so sure about Tron legacy
Definitilly Tron: Legacy. I saw both movies and Yogi Bear was just random cartoon violence. And Tron: Legacy is like the movie version of Windows XP. It has a good plot, amazing graphics, there’s a few viruses and it may take an expert to understand all of it. But overall, I would choose Tron: Legacy
Yogi Bear…. The best movie ever!! Tron legacy is best movie too..
YOGI BEAR TODLLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I SOOOOO <3 tron legacy………….
YOGI BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am ALL for Tron:Legacy!!!!!!!! 😀 I love dark things…So thats a good movie for me… 😀
Tron Legacy’s awesome! 🙂
