Name the Baby Gorilla: Update!
A couple weeks back I posted a story about how the Toronto Zoo was going to great lengths to find a name for its newest member: a baby Western Lowland gorilla. The Zoo posted a list of 10 names on their website and asked people to vote. Well, lots of you voted, and the list of names was narrowed to five: Nassir, Neo, Nico, Nigel, and Nsambu.
Then, Charles (the baby’s father) was allowed to choose the name from those five. How did he choose the name? Read on for the story from the Zoo:
Letting his nose be the guide, Western Lowland gorilla dad Charles was able, this morning, to choose a name for his baby son, born on September 2, 2009. Faced with five stations, each containing an equally favoured treat, such as banana leaves, and a sign with one of the five finalist names, Charles, after some consideration, made a beeline for the container bearing the name “Nassir” and, incidentally, some choice apples, pears, and oranges.
Wow! Nassir! As it turns out, that means “protector.”
Also, I think it’s really cool how the Zoo involved both parents in the naming. They only used names beginning in “N” to honour the baby’s mother (Nzomi), and then let the baby’s father have the final say in choosing the name.
Fun, right? Right! Talk to you on Friday.
