OWL World Cup Preview: Update!
As most of you know, we published a World Cup preview story in the June issue of OWL. We offered some facts, showed you some moves, and introduced you to some players to watch. However, as luck would have it, things haven’t worked out so well for them.
Check out how the World Cup is going so far for our “Team Players”:
NAME: Didier Drogba
TEAM: Cóte d’Ivoire
HOW HE’S DOING: Not bad, considering he broke his arm playing a friendly game the week before the World Cup began. Drogba is playing with a cast, and even scored a goal in his second game.
HOW HIS TEAM IS DOING: Not good. They would need a huge win against North Korea (and I mean by, like, 10 goals) on Friday to have any hope of moving on in the World Cup.
NAME: Gianluigi Buffon
TEAM: Italy
HOW HE’S DOING: Fine, until a back injury sidelined him midway through his first game of the tournament.
HOW HIS TEAM IS DOING: A lot of people expected Italy (the defending World Cup champions) to do better, but a win over Slovakia tomorrow will still probably get them into the next round.
NAME: Kaká
TEAM: Brazil
HOW HE’S DOING: Great, until a bad call got him kicked out of his last game, making him ineligible to play in his team’s next game.
HOW HIS TEAM IS DOING: Finally, a silver lining! Because Brazil won its first two games, Kaká can rest easy knowing his team is already moving on in the tournament.
Amazing, huh? Especially after our January/February “Goin’ for Gold” issue, in which four of the seven Olympic athletes we interviewed went on to win medals. Guess our hot streak ended!
What do you guys think: do we need to feel bad about this? Should we write their teams to apologize? Is it all just a crazy coincidence? Let me know in the comments below!

I don’t like this soccer it’s boring no offence.
I LOVE SOCCER… WHO DO YOU GUYS CHEER 4 IN THE FIFA WORLD CUP? I AM ALL 4 ITALY!
Update: Italy just LOST to Slovakia! That means only one of the three players we featured will make it to the second round. Talk about bad luck!
Why do you think soccer is boring? It is fun! I love soccer alot. I can not wait for the fifa results.
Thanks 4 the info Craig.
Who do u belive Craig? Me or Keara cause I’ve been on here 4 2 years and Keara just got here. Sorry 4 the tension.
No worries, Mara! It’s cool to have differences of opinion, as long as everyone’s respectful. And you guys seem to be doing just fine in that department. Personally, soccer isn’t my favourite sport, but I love watching the World Cup. So much emotion!
This is kind of sad. I hope they’re feeling better soon.
Ya ok keara let’s drop the tension. We are like bestfriends so that’s y everything is happening. Inside thing…
thats kind of sad. oh well! maybe we jinxed it by putting it on the web. who knows?
LOVE SOCCER.
Wow, I’m super surprised Italy’s out! I cant believe it….They won the last World Cup, and I think they were expected to place well in this one, 2010.
Disappointing that New Zealand’s also out, due to their great turn-out (for ranking 32 out of 32!).
Did anyone see the win of Portugal against North Korea?!?! 7-0!!! WoW~For those who follow hockey, and not soccer, that score is like 10-0 for a hockey game!!! Wow!
Check out all the new results and see how your favourite players are going at~

I agree with you Craig. I love watching soccer but playing is not my fav.
Are you serious… Italy is out. I was really cheering for them.
cool
I’m really disappointed that Brazil is kicked out of The FIFA World Cup this year, though I’m not a big fan of Brazil. I hope Germany will win, since their team works together the best and they have a ton of energy.
