Hurricane Jeanne passed just north of Haiti as a tropical storm, dumping over 30 cm (1 ft.) of rain on the country's northern mountains, and causing severe flooding.
Four powerful storms pummeled Haiti throughout the month. The hurricanes destroyed or damaged thousands of homes and wiped out 70 percent of Haiti's crops.
On January 12, an earthquake shook Haiti to its core. Many cities and towns were devastated, including the capital, Port-au-Prince, where two million people live.
