RAotW #30
First, a confession: I painted myself into a corner here by promising two things by the end of this week and then not getting around to either of them until today. The two things: a new edition of Reader Art of the Week and the roundup from the Reverse Mailbag I posted a couple weeks back.
Long story short, I decided to go with blog reader Nicole’s awesome haiku for three separate reasons:
1) I love it!;
2) OWL has a Haiku Poetry Contest coming up this spring, and this will give you all a chance to brush up on the form; and
3) It gives stragglers a chance to answer the questions in the Reverse Mailbag mentioned above! If you haven’t posted a comment with your answers yet, click here (after you read the poem below, of course!).
Without further adieu, on to Nicole’s haiku!:
Snowflakes are falling
Swirling and twirling around
Slowly and softly
Nice! As I already mentioned, I love this poem. It does a great job of following the rigid syllable structure of the haiku (five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third), and it focuses on a specific season, which haikus often do. It’s also perfectly timed for winter!
Many thanks to Nicole for sending in her haiku. If you have a poem, short story, drawing, or photo you’d like to see posted on the blog, all you have to do is send it in! Just email me at owlblog@owlkids.com.
Have a great weekend!

Very nice Nicole!
I can already imagine snowflakes, falling slowly, swirling and twirling! Keep on going, girl!
Wow! Nicole this is amazing. I thought I was reading a professional poem. It’s perfect. It seems so simple and real, but I bet it wasn’t as easy creating it as it is reading it! Well done.
