RAotW #33
Happy Monday, OWL bloggers! What do you say we get this week off to a good FANTASTIC start with some Reader Art of the Week? What say we do!
This week’s art comes to us from blog reader Nicole, and it comes to us in the form of fiction. Nicole is working on a novel, entitled Witchcraft, and she’s sent us the first chapter for our reading pleasure. Check it out:
Witchcraft (Chapter 1)
I was raised by a witch. At least that’s what my foster mom, Hagathia, told me. I guess it isn’t really her fault, though. I mean, you can’t help it if you’re a witch. So I guess there’s only my real parents left to blame, and since I don’t know them at all, I guess there’s no one left to blame. And if there’s no one to blame, that’s a problem. Because when you’re a person like me, who’s been locked inside a house for 10 years, then you need someone to blame. Let me introduce myself. My name’s Leila Hepburn. Hagathia says it means “beautiful one.” I think whoever chose my name was a fool. I’m not at all pretty. In fact, I’m the exact opposite. Hagathia says that makes me look like a real witch. I think it makes me look like something the cat dragged in. Now, before you go thinking this is going to turn into one of those romantic novels, let me tell you one thing: it’s not. I don’t eat a poison apple and I don’t have evil stepsisters. In fact, I have no siblings. I guess that’s sort of what you’d expect if you lived in a haunted castle in the middle of nowhere. But that’s not the point. In fact, none of this is the point. Except the witch part. Because that’s kind of what the whole story is about.
Cool! There’s a lot here to whet the appetite for more of this story, but my fave thing about it is definitely the “voice” Nicole has created for our narrator, Leila. She’s honest and funny with an extremely dry sense of humour. I could definitely read a lot more from her!
Many thanks to Nicole for sending in her story. Now I need the rest of you to send in something so we can do this again next week. Drawings, photos, poems, stories, videos: it’s all good! If you created it and want to show it off to your fellow blog readers, just email it to me at owlblog@owlkids.com.
Hope to hear from you soon!
