Chirp’s Silly Putty
Hi readers,
It’s time to get silly! Here’s a recipe for silly putty that you can make at home. You can stretch it, sculpt it, and bounce it like a ball!
You’ll need:
- 1 bottle of white glue
- 120 mL water
- 1/2 tsp borax (we found ours at the grocery store)
- 60 mL hot water
- food colouring (optional)
- two bowls
- spoon
- Mix the water and glue in a bowl until combined.
- Add the food colouring and stir until mixed.
- In a separate bowl, stir together the hot water and borax.
- Pour the borax mixture into the other bowl and watch what happens!

What size bottle of glue?
Just a regular size bottle of glue should work but don’t worry if you use too much — you might just have to do some trial and error to get the right mixture. Good luck!
I don’t have borax what can I use instead of borax
Hi Adiba,
You might be able to replace the borax with baking soda and a bit more water, but we have not tried this method so I’m not sure. We bought borax at the local grocery store so hopefully it’s easy enough to find for you.
but can I use less glue?
We used a whole standard-size bottle of glue and the recipe worked well. You might be able to use less and just experiment with the measurements. Let us know if you find a recipe that works well!
my friends use very little glue,and very little borax,she made a mini slime putty,it

Sorry, but a “regular size bottle of glue” isn’t specific enough for a recipe. Tell us how many mls in that bottle of glue.
What may be “regular size” to one person may not be what another person perceives as such. Ingredients can be expensive, and I wouldn’t want to be stuck with the useless leftovers of a too-large bottle of glue.

Hi Lu, for this project, we used a 118 mL bottle of glue which we purchased at a dollar store. We found that bottles of glue came in generally the same size (unless they are mini or jumbo). But the beauty of this recipe is that you can always add more if you need to or you can use less and adjust the other ingredients accordingly. Have fun crafting!
How much does this make? I’m wanting to do this for my son’s Science Birthday party and not sure how many batches we should make.
This made about three ***** of putty so I would make a couple batches depending on how many kids are at the party. You might have to adjust the amounts slightly and do some trial and error. Have fun!
Ok, so, I don’t have very much glue AND don’t have ANY borax. What could I do?
Also my mom is to busy to drive to the store.
