Hurray! It’s Groundhog Day!

Hey there readers,

Did you know that February 2nd is Groundhog Day?

They say that on this day if a groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, it will be an early spring. If he does see his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter! This tradition goes back all the way to the year 1841, where groundhogs, badgers, and even bears were used to figure out the coming weather.

Groundhogs aren’t the only animals to help people predict the weather. Frogs will croak louder if a storm is coming and ants will build up their mounds to stop rushing rainwater. So cool!

Do you hope the groundhog will see his shadow for 6 more weeks of winter or are you wishing for spring?

Today is Groundhog Day!

If a groundhog comes out of its den and sees his shadow, it means there’s six more weeks of winter to go. If he doesn’t see his shadow, it means that spring is just around the corner.

Here in Ontario, we look to Wiarton Willie to tell us his prediction. So what did Willie predict when he scurried out of his little den today? He saw his shadow! This means we have six more weeks of winter to go. If his prediction is true, that gives us lots of time to sled, build snowmen, ski and snowboard before spring. Yay!

They say that on this day, if a groundhog comes out of its burrow and it is cloudy and dark out, spring will come soon. But if the groundhog comes out and it is sunny and the groundhog can see its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. Is it sunny or cloudy where you live today? What do you think the groundhog will decide? I hope he says that spring will come soon!

Today is Groundhog Day! On February 2nd, people in North America look to their favourite groundhog to predict the weather.

Tradition says that if the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, it will be an early spring. If he does see his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

Canada’s two most famous groundhogs were out and about today and this is what happened:

In Nova Scotia, Shubenacadie Sam came out of his burrow and saw his shadow. That means there are six more weeks of winter!

In Ontario, Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow, which means there will be an early spring!

Which groundhog is correct? Only time will tell. In the meantime, enjoy the weather wherever you are!
