Movie Review: The Jungle Book

Disney’s on a live-action remake roll! I got to see their latest film, The Jungle Book, in theatres a few days ago. And now you can, too!

Mowgli, a “man-cub” raised by wolves, has always been safe and happy with his pack. But that all changes when Shere Khan, the most feared tiger in the jungle, becomes obsessed with one thing: getting rid of him. Now Mowgli must leave his pack behind and try to reach the safety of the man village.

And what an adventure he has on the way! The colours pop right out at you, the action scenes are nail-biting, and the animals look so real you can almost feel them rushing past. This is a flick that’s funny, heartwarming, and lots of fun to watch. But a word of warning: There are some frightening scenes that may scare younger viewers, so you may want to sit this one out and stick with Disney’s original animated version!

Movie News: Epic

Looking for a little adventure this weekend? Or should I say, a little adventure that turns into a really big one?

Epic is a new movie based on the book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. It’s about a girl named Mary Katherine who is magically transported to a small, secret universe in the forest where a battle between good and evil is being fought. Before she has time to make sense of her tiny new size, Mary Katherine is flung into the battle. And she finds herself fighting alongside a group of warriors known as the Leafmen to save their world — and ours.

I got a chance to see this new movie last week, and here’s what I thought!

1. The animation is awesome. It’s one of the best-looking flicks I’ve seen in awhile! Check out the trailer below to see what I mean.

2. It’s funny. Mostly thanks to the movie’s main stars (in my opinion): Grub and Mub. The loveable snail and slug pals had me laughing pretty much non-stop.

3. It’s full of magic, wonder, and adventure. It better be with a title like “Epic”, right? And while it may not actually be the most epic movie you’ve ever seen, it’s still got all the fixings to make it a favourite.

OWL Assistant Editor, Kendra Brown, is our movie guru, and we’re anxious for her review on the movie, The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Kendra, take it away!

Ahoy, mateys! The Pirates! Band of Misfits is sailing into theatres today. I got a chance to see a preview screening, so I’m here to share some thoughts.

When we meet the Pirate Captain and his jolly crew of misfits, they’re on a mission to help the Captain achieve his lifelong dream of becoming Pirate of the Year. But he’s up against some very tough, cutthroat pirates, like Cutlass Liz and Black Bellamy. After several amusing but unsuccessful attempts to plunder ships, the Captain’s chances at pirate glory aren’t looking good.

That is, until they stumble upon scientist Charles Darwin, and what could be the Captain’s key to becoming Pirate of the Year.

Here are a few observations about the movie:

 

1. It’s silly. From the Pirate Captain’s luxurious beard and love of ham, to a chimpanzee named Mister Bobo and a chase scene in a bathtub, this movie is full of non-stop silliness. There were tons of scenes that had me, and the rest of the theatre, chuckling out loud.

 

2. It’s swashbuckling. The Pirate Captain and his crew may not be the most skilled swashbucklers around, but adventure and excitement are still never far behind them. And the piratical adventure they get up to in this movie is epic. Let’s just say it involves sword fighting and the Queen of England.

 

3. It’s all in the details. This movie was filmed using stop-motion animation. Shooting frame by frame, hundreds of characters and props made of clay were adjusted about 24 times for every second of screen time. Plus, filmmakers used CGI (computer-generated imagery) for backgrounds and finishing touches. The end result? Totally awesome detail brought to life on the big screen in 3-D. (Note: pay particular attention to the Pirate Captain’s curly beard. Wow.)

 

Overall, I thought this flick was a boatload of fun. If you’re looking for a silly, swashbuckling adventure on the high seas, then this movie is for you!
